High Holy Day Services

Other High Holy Day services throughout Ventura County include:

* At Temple Etz Chaim in Thousand Oaks, Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year 5760, will be celebrated today at 8:15 p.m. and on Sunday at 9:30 a.m. Cantor Jeff Cohen will be accompanied by a 20-voice choir under the direction of Rebecca Somberg.

Yom Kippur will begin with the chanting of Kol Nidre at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 19. On Sept. 20, services will begin at 9:30 a.m.

From 1:30 to 4 p.m. in the Winer chapel, Leah Shechter will speak on the Book of Jonah. Afterward, teens will lead a discussion on moral issues of the day.

Yizkor services will be held at 4:15 p.m. Tickets are not required for Yizkor, although those attending are asked to remain for the entire service, which ends at sundown with the sounding of the shofar at 7:30 p.m.

Family services on both Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur will begin in the sanctuary at 2:30 p.m. The junior congregation will also hold services each holiday for children in grades 3 to 7 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Reservations for child care are required.

To accommodate the large number of people in attendance, an additional service will be held next door to the main sanctuary, led by Rabbi Jack Shechter and cantor Nathan Wine.

* At Oxnard’s Congregation Am HaYam, the first-day services of Rosh Hashana are at 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. today.

The second-day service on Sunday is at 9 a.m., and Tashlich Sunday service at Oxnard Shores will start at 6 p.m.

On Friday, Erev Shabbat Shuvah will begin at 8 p.m. Shabbat Shuvah begins at 10 a.m. the next day.

Kol Nidre will be observed at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 19.

The first Yom Kippur service begins at 9 a.m. Sept. 20. Yizkor is at 1 p.m., Minchah is at 4:30 p.m., Neilah at 6 p.m., Havdalah and Maariv at 7:15, and the final shofar sounding is at 7:30 p.m.

All services other than the Tashlich service will be held at the Oxnard Monday Club, 1401 W. Gonzales Road.

* For the 10th year, a Chabad of the Conejo Tashlich Walk will begin at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at the Hyatt Westlake Plaza Hotel in Westlake Village and proceed to the Westlake Lake.

Jews from all synagogues are welcome to join in the walk. For further information, call Chabad at (818) 991-0991.

* At Ventura’s Temple Beth Torah, the Rosh Hashana service begins at 10 a.m. today. Tickets are required. At this service, the congregation will observe the arrival of the year 5760 with the blowing of the shofar, a ram’s horn.

At 5:30 p.m. today, congregants will hold an oceanfront Tashlich service at Marina Beach Park in order “to cast away their sins with bread crumbs in the ocean,” said Rabbi Lisa Hochberg-Miller.

The Sunday morning service will begin at 10, and tickets are required. At 4 p.m., a graveside memorial service will be held at Ivy Lawn Cemetery in Ventura.

An Erev Yom Kippur-Kol Nidre service is set for 8 p.m. Sept. 19.

On Yom Kippur, the morning service is at 10 a.m. Sept. 20; tickets are required, and child care is available with prior reservations. A healing service will follow the morning service at 1 p.m. The 2 p.m. family service requires no tickets. The afternoon service begins at 3.

A Sukkot festival service on Sept. 24 will begin with a family picnic in the Sukkah at 6 p.m., followed by 7:30 p.m. services. The Sept. 25 Sukkot service will begin at 10 a.m.

Jewish military personnel in uniform may attend all services without a ticket but should call the temple first.

* Congregation B’Nai Emet will hold Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur services at the Rancho Santa Susana Recreation Center in Simi Valley.

The Kol Nidre service for Yom Kippur is Sept. 19 at 8 p.m. Yom Kippur continues Sept. 20 at 10 a.m. with a children’s service at 1 p.m. and adult study session at 3:30. Concluding services begin at 4:30 p.m.
