Satan References Date to the Old Testament

Share

Paula Meier’s statement in her letter to the editor (Sept. 8) that Satan is a Christian invention is false. “Satan” is a Hebrew word that is translated “to attack, accuse, be an adversary” and “an opponent, especially the archenemy of God” in Strong’s Concordance (an index to the Bible). Satan is mentioned 18 times in the Old Testament, mostly in the book of Job, but also in Zechariah, Psalms and 1 Chronicles.

It is also worth mentioning that Jesus mentions Satan by name 11 times in the four Gospels, which makes either Meier or Jesus wrong about him being an invention. With all due respect to Meier’s right to religious freedom, I put my trust in Jesus.
