Patty DeDominic launched PDQ Personnel Services Inc. in 1979. The company has become a leading temporary employment placement service used by the public and private sectors and not-for-profit organizations. DeDominic brought to PDQ 20 years’ experience in staffing, recruiting and hiring. She has been recognized by Congress and labor and business groups for her achievements in business and human resources. She has also held leadership positions as president of the National Assn. of Women Business Owners, Los Angeles Chapter, and with the United Nations’ Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing.

Linda Griego

Coordinating rebuilding efforts after the 1992 riots as head of Rebuild L.A., Linda Griego became one of Los Angeles’ most high-profile businesspeople. Griego is now interim chief executive of the Los Angeles Community Development Bank, whose mission is to build business and jobs in the inner city. She was appointed last year as Los Angeles director of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, and has served as deputy mayor of Los Angeles. She serves on the board of directors of major corporations and not-for-profit organizations, and is managing general partner of 13-year-old Engine Co. No. 28, a downtown Los Angeles restaurant.

Earvin “Magic” Johnson

Magic Johnson Enterprises Inc.,

Since retiring from the Los Angeles Lakers, Earvin “Magic” Johnson has redefined himself as a businessman and spearheaded economic redevelopment projects in neglected communities. Johnson Development Corp., a division of Magic Johnson Enterprises, built and operates entertainment complexes in depressed neighborhoods in Los Angeles, Atlanta, Houston and Cleveland. Johnson recently joined forces with Howard Schultz, chairman and chief executive of Starbucks Coffee Co., to develop joint ventures in underserved communities. Johnson also runs a not-for-profit foundation focusing on the health, education and social needs of inner-city youth.

Alfred E. Mann

MiniMed Inc., Sylmar

Alfred E. Mann is chief executive of two companies he founded: MiniMed Inc., maker of insulin pumps, and Advanced Bionics Corp., whose cochlear implants stimulate hearing in the deaf. His latest endeavor is philanthropy. Last year Mann announced gifts totaling $200 million to fund biomedical research institutes at USC and UCLA. Mann also chairs the boards of nine companies and not-for-profit organizations, all involved in medical research or other aspects of the biomedical industry. He first made his mark in the biomedical industry in 1972 when he founded Pacesetter Systems Inc., which manufactured cardiac pacemakers. He sold the company to Siemens in 1985 for $150 million.
