The Chamber of Commerce is up in arms about an Assembly bill that would limit the development of “big box” discount retailers.
The chamber passed a resolution this month in opposition to Assembly Bill 84. The bill, sponsored by Dick Floyd (D-Wilmington), would prohibit local governments from approving plans for 100,000-square-foot discount stores that would have more than 15,000 square feet dedicated to nontaxable merchandise, like food products.
The bill was designed to help smaller neighborhood stores. Chamber board members say it unfairly targets the retail stores and strips local governments of the authority to make land use decisions. Information: (714) 638-7950.
