Stamp of Disapproval

Share

The Citizens Stamp Advisory Committee seems to lack understanding of music for films (“First-Class Hollywood Composers,” by Jon Burlingame, Sept. 12).

Miklos Rozsa created “genres” of film music from the Arabian Nights sensuality of “The Thief of Bagdad” for Alexander Korda to the noir of “Brute Force,” “Double Indemnity,” “The Naked City” and “The Lost Weekend.” His epic period more than carried such spectacles as “Quo Vadis,” “Ben-Hur” and “El Cid.” Rozsa’s “serious” music introduced me to the world of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. He made time to lecture on music for the screen at the USC cinema department and provided his students, and me, with insight into the importance music plays in creating atmospheres and drama.

Rozsa should be in the upper right corner of the panel of the six Hollywood Composers stamps.

How on Earth could they overlook Rozsa? Maybe there should be eight stamps to also include George Antheil.

Rozsa died on July 27, 1995. The U.S. Postal Service requires that persons (presidents excepted) be dead at least 10 years before being honored with a stamp.
