Stepping Into the Day: On Saturdays, my husband [novelist Ajay Sahgal] and I usually exercise in the morning. We like to go on a long walk around the neighborhood [in Los Feliz] during the baby’s nap time. [Their son, Kiran, is 15 months old.] Or maybe I’ll go up into Runyon Canyon with a girlfriend. I’ve been running and hiking a lot lately.

Lunchtime: I love the Mustard Seed on Hillhurst. The chiffonade salad is my favorite. It’s got three different types of lettuce, tossed in this great champagne vinaigrette. Sometimes, we’ll go up and do a hike in Griffith Park afterward.

Time for Romance: On Saturday night, we’ll occasionally get a baby-sitter and actually have a night out. Like a date night. It’s kind of rare, so it’s a treat. It’s usually mellow. We’ll go to one of our favorite restaurants--maybe Ciudad, the Two Hot Tamales’ new restaurant downtown. It’s a beautiful, airy place, and it’s such great food. It’s best to get a bunch of little plates of different things--like empanadas, great little salads, yucca mashed potatoes. And they’ve got this chocolate cake that is unbelievable.

Venturing East: Another great restaurant that we like to go to is La Serenata de Giribaldi in Boyle Heights. I love that place. I especially love the camarones negros--that great spicy, spicy shrimp. And Cha Cha Cha is also one of my favorites. I love the jerk chicken.

Family Outing: Sunday is usually our big day, when we go to my in-laws’ house in Anaheim Hills. On the way there, we usually stop in Artesia at Little India and get some Indian snacks--like halvah and spicy cashews--at a place called Ambala Sweets. They’ve got a lot of great stores there along Pioneer Boulevard. My mother-in-law makes this great lunch of homemade Indian food. Total comfort food. The in-laws play with the baby, and we get to relax. I adore my in-laws, so it’s really a nice, relaxing day.

Alternate Plan: Sometimes, if we don’t go down to Orange County, we’ll go to the Farmers Market. My son loves it. I’ll pick up some great produce, and he’ll walk up and down. There’s all these kids around for him to play with, and if there’s a dog around, he’s happy. He loves to sit around and point at dogs.
