7 Top Officials to Be Suspended in Bank Scandal
The Indonesian parliament today approved recommendations that seven top officials, including a close aide to President B.J. Habibie, be suspended from their jobs and formally investigated in relation to a banking scandal.
The recommendations came from a special parliamentary team investigating the scandal.
The team’s report says action should be taken against, among others, Bank Indonesia Governor Syahril Sabirin, Indonesian Bank Restructuring Agency, or IBRA, chief Glenn Yusuf, Finance Minister Bambang Subianto and top Habibie advisor A.A. Baramuli.
Others named were IBRA deputy chairmen Pande Lubis and Farid Harianto, and State Enterprises Minister Tanri Abeng. The report urged action against six other people, including some Bank Bali officials and Setya Novanto, a deputy treasurer of the ruling Golkar party.
Indonesia’s opposition has alleged that money taken from Bank Bali went into the coffers of Habibie’s reelection campaign, an allegation that he has denied. All those named by parliament have denied wrongdoing.
Major international aid donors have suspended loans to Indonesia until the scandal is resolved.
