Mother of Racer Knows the Feeling

I’m writing regarding your article, “Track of Their Tears” [March 25] and the anniversary of the death of Casey Diemert.

I remember that afternoon because my family and I were so excited that Irwindale Speedway had opened. You see, my family has been involved in kart racing for many years. Where Casey got his start on the streets of Oregon, my son has been involved in kart racing in Southern California.

I can certainly relate to Casey’s family wanting to support his dream over the years, his mom videotaping his races. I have done the same thing for my son. In the beginning, when my son was 12, I couldn’t watch him race, and every race I’ve ever taped I’ve also prayed him around the track. Yes, like so many sports, auto racing is dangerous and yet it is the dream of many husbands, brothers, fathers and sons, so we support them.

Don’t slam the speedway! Yes, a driver could die, just like people die on the freeways, Oh, and maybe we should stop flying, (jets and helicopters have been crashing frequently too). And by the way, how many kids were killed in high school football last year?

Granted this was a horrible accident, but your writing does more damage than a tribute to this young driver.

Let’s hope Irwindale has a great season, is able to expand and improve its facility and improve their procedure in the event of such tragedies.
