Underage Drinking

Share

We read “To Binge Drink or Not” (Voices, March 25) in total amazement. Two of the three Los Angeles college students were underage. Therein lies the problem with drinking on college campuses--underage drinking, binge or not!

Enrique Sanchez talks about the four summers he spent in France, where children “are given wine at dinner.” It is legal there. And, it is in an environment in which adults (authority) control the situation. It is not legal to drink in this state until the age of 21. Lauren Supance talks so casually about her behavior. She talks as though her (underage) drinking is OK because she has stress in her life. Aaron Freedman, the only individual of legal drinking age, shows the maturity to control his drinking and that of the fraternity he belongs to.

The statistics given in the introduction seem to point a finger at the Greek system. The finger needs to be pointed sharply at the system itself--colleges and universities--for looking the other way.
