Hundreds of Rebels Lay Down Weapons
More than 530 separatist guerrillas armed with guns and explosives surrendered their weapons to authorities, giving up their fight for independence for the northeastern Indian state of Assam. Most of the insurgents belonged to the middle and senior ranks of the United Liberation Front of Assam, a group that has fought Indian security forces for more than 20 years. The surrender in Sibsagar was the biggest since the United Liberation Front of Assam was created in 1979. Authorities estimate that 2,000 fighters remain in the jungle.
