Ministers Seek Surplus Funds for Inner City

SOUTH LOS ANGELES — A coalition of ministers have scheduled a local economic summit to urge the governor and Legislature to earmark some of California’s $10-billion budget surplus for inner-city neighborhoods that have yet to share in the state’s prosperity.
“We are united today to ask, rather, to implore, the state representatives and the governor to invest in the lives of those who are most in need,” said the Rev. Edward Turner of the Power of Love Christian Church.
“We are tired of hearing about how strong and glowing California’s economy is while residents in this community lack access to the good-paying jobs that they need,” Turner said. “If they had jobs in this community and strong community businesses and . . . affordable housing and competitive schools, then California would truly be prosperous.”
Turner joined this week with Sheriff Lee Baca and other officials to announce an April 28 summit at the fellowship headquarters.
The event, they said, is aimed at persuading state and local officials to develop strategies and funding solutions to rebuild inner-city communities.
