Teacher Pay

Share

There are several things the letter writers (April 4) forgot about teaching in the Golden State. Money for education took a 16-year hit with our two Republican governors. Remember the motto, you get what you pay for? No other profession is tied to “performance by users.” Are doctors docked their payment because the patient doesn’t get well as soon or a fast as they might desire? Are lawyers penalized when their clients go to jail? Do dentists receive less because a filling falls out? The people of Los Angeles ought to get some prespective on this issue.

One day teachers may be evaluated and get extra pay based on their students’ Stanford 9 scores and improvement in those scores. I teach English as a second language at a high school in the LAUSD. Some of our students had been in this country less than six months and were given a test designed to measure the English skills of native, English-speaking students. Some ESL students had not gotten past sixth grade in their own countries. And we are supposed to be evaluated on such test scores?
