I have been doing what Andy Slater does for 20 years (“The Key to Success Lies in the Mix.’ by Robert Hilburn, April 2)I was an artist produced by Barry White; director of publishing at Arista, Chappell and Casablanca; and director of A&R; at Motown and Arista. I have managed, produced and written for artists during this time.

Unless you’re in the “hot circle,” as Andy is, it’s much harder to get the exposure and the offer of your own record company that he has. There is a much bigger pool of talent out there if only the powers that be would look a little harder.

So Andy Slater manages and produces (among others) Fiona Apple, the Wallflowers and Macy Gray. Thank you for the info. Now we know who is responsible for a big chunk of the lightweight, disposable pop crap that is foisted on the public by the recording industry.
