Cornfield Development

* We applaud your efforts to support renewed use of the Los Angeles River (editorial, March 25) and the property along its banks; however, improving the river for future generations should consider each parcel of land on an individual basis. Some sites are better utilized for job generation and economic prosperity and are unsafe for many community uses. The Cornfield site is one such site. It is the last opportunity to provide a quality industrial park to attract new businesses and jobs to the Chinatown area.

The River Station project on the Cornfield site will become an integral partner in the community. The Cornfield site is contaminated and federal funds have been authorized toward cleaning the site to an industrial standard (not a standard that could make the land usable for residences, schools or parkland). The River Station project will provide up to 1,000 desperately needed jobs in the manufacturing, distribution and import/export businesses.

River Station is the result of several years of planning and community cooperation. We can provide for bike paths, open space and community uses along North Broadway. The project has the potential to be a win-win when all of the issues relating to the site are considered. We should not allow the debate to be confused with issues concerning the Los Angeles River, which does not come near the site.
