Homeowners in Placentia’s lower-income areas may be able to get money from the city to paint or repair their houses.

The city is formalizing the guidelines of a Housing Rehabilitation Grant Program to phase out a loan program and provide grants instead.

Joyce Rosenthal, director of development services, said homeowners in the Atwood, La Jolla and Santa Fe neighborhoods were not responding to the city’s low-interest loan programs because they didn’t earn enough to take on the added debt. She said the city hopes that by awarding grants, more homeowners will take advantage of the program.

The program provides grants of up to $5,000 for roof repair or replacement, exterior painting and other improvements.
