Cable Snaps, Electrocutes 28 at Hindu Event, Reports Say

An 11,000-volt cable snapped and electrocuted 28 Hindu devotees today during a midnight chariot procession, injuring eight others, domestic news agencies reported.

A tall flagstaff being carried in the procession to celebrate the birth of Lord Rama, oneof the most revered of Hindu gods, rammed into the electricity wire. The cable split andfell on the crowd below, setting fire to a colorful chariot that was the highlight of the procession, United News of India reported.

The accident in the town of Daltenganj in the eastern state of Bihar occurred a little after midnight. Four of the injured were reported to have suffered serious burns.

Few other details were immediately available from the area, about 535 miles southeast of New Delhi.
