Supervisors OK $4 Million for Family of Slain Man

The County Board of Supervisors Tuesday approved a $4-million settlement of a lawsuit filed by the family of millionaire Donald Scott, who was shot to death in a Sheriff’s Department narcotics raid on his sprawling Ventura County ranch.

The 1992 raid turned up no drugs. Scott’s family and the Ventura County district attorney’s office said authorities had apparently launched the operation hoping to seize Scott’s 200-acre ranch under narcotics asset forfeiture laws.

In January, the county and federal government agreed to settle the family’s lawsuit for $5 million, with the county paying $4 million and the federal government paying the rest. Supervisors approved their share of the settlement Tuesday without comment.
