Eminent U.S. Warriors Will Grace New Stamps

Four American military heroes from two world wars will receive philatelic honors on a quartet of U.S. 33-cent stamps. They are Sgt. Alvin C. York and Gen. John L. Hines, who served with distinction during World War I, and Lt. Audie L. Murphy and Gen. Omar N. Bradley, heralded for heroism in World War II.

York was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his single-handed capture of many German soldiers during the first world war.

Hines was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and the Distinguished Service Medal for bravery and leadership in combat. He later became Army Chief of Staff.

Murphy received the Congressional Medal of Honor, among many other awards, during World War II. Murphy was the most decorated soldier during that conflict. He went on to star in several motion pictures starting in the late 1940s.

Bradley received numerous awards for commanding the 1st Army during the 1944 D-Day landing in Normandy. He subsequently served as Army Chief of Staff and as the first chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The new stamps, to be issued May 3, will feature black-and-white photos of the honored four.

The U.S. Postal Service has placed considerable emphasis on its youth programs, particularly the “Stampin’ the Future” design contest for youngsters ages 8 to 12. Kids from various sections of the country and its territories were invited to submit stamp designs based on their visions of the 21st century.

The winning designs were submitted by Zachary Canter of Kailua, Hawaii, Morgan Hill of Montclair, N.J., Sarah Lipsey of Memphis, Tenn., and Ashley Young of Sandy, Utah.

Their designs were incorporated into U.S. stamps to be exhibited at the World Kids Congress, a part of the World Stamp Expo 2000 scheduled for July 7-16 in Anaheim.
