A known gang member was sentenced Tuesday to a month in jail and three years’ probation for attempting to steal two roosters from a backyard coop in Pacoima.

Jose Larios, 21, of Pacoima pleaded no contest to one count of trespassing.

Larios was fumbling for the roosters in the backyard of a Mercer Street home about 11 p.m. April 11 when residents heard the rustling, authorities said.

The residents rushed outside and found Larios with his hands in the coop, Deputy City Atty. Anthony Koutris said. They chased him into an alley where police officers were waiting.

“The officers had run into Larios a couple of times before and recognized him,” Koutris said.

Under terms of his probation, Larios cannot associate with other gang members or wear any gang-oriented clothing, Koutris said. He also was ordered to stay away from the victims and their residence.
