The Newport Dunes project, a proposed resort hotel that has divided the city for months, may pass its first major hurdle at tonight’s Planning Commission meeting.

The proposal, which includes a four-story, 470-room hotel and a 31,000-square-foot conference center to be built on the site of the Newport Dunes recreational vehicle resort, has been modified based on Planning Commission criticism of an earlier, larger plan. The panel could approve the revised plan and send it to the City Council, delay it again or reject it.

Commission Chairman Ed Selich said he’s essentially satisfied with the proposal as it now stands.
