D.C. Zoo Shooting Suspect, 16, Is Charged as Adult
A 16-year-old boy accused of shooting seven children at the National Zoo was charged Wednesday as an adult.
Antoine Bernard Jones, who police say is the son of a convicted drug ring enforcer, is charged with assault with intent to commit murder while armed in the shooting of an 11-year-old boy.
The boy, who remains in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the head, was injured when a gunman opened fire on a group of young people outside the zoo Monday, police said. Police have said the shooting stemmed from a quarrel between two groups of youths.
Six other children, ages 12 to 16, were treated and released from hospitals.
Jones was ordered held without bond pending a May 12 preliminary hearing. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.
Police say Jones is the son of James Antonio Jones, 44, who once was an enforcer for a drug ring. He is serving 29 years in prison after a 1990 drug conspiracy conviction.
