Sony Delays Launch of PlayStation 2 in Europe

Bloomberg News

Sony Corp. said it delayed introduction of its PlayStation 2 game system in Europe to Nov. 24 to ensure it has enough supply after selling more than 3 million units in Japan. The PlayStation 2 was originally scheduled for introduction in Europe and the United States on Oct. 26. U.S. plans remain on track, Sony said. The PlayStation 2 offers advanced graphics and can play DVD movies and games made for the original PlayStation. The PlayStation 2 went on sale in March in Japan. Because Tokyo-based Sony is working to meet domestic demand, the company has failed to produce enough consoles that comply with the European television standard called PAL, a spokeswoman said. The console, which will retail for $299 in the U.S., will cost more than $400 in Britain, France and Germany.
