Realty Index Charts Price Differences

Coldwell Banker has released its 2000 Home Price Comparison Index, which showed a $802,500 price difference between similar homes in California’s most expensive and most affordable housing markets.

The index evaluates the average sales price of similar homes in middle-income neighborhoods across the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico. According to the report, a typical four-bedroom 2,200-square-foot home in Palo Alto costs about $974,237, and a similar house in Bakersfield goes for about $171,737.

Nationwide, the greatest home-price disparity exists between Palo Alto, and Mount Pleasant, Mich. The average sales price for the Michigan four-bedroom home is $103,640, about $871,000 cheaper than its counterpart in Northern California.
