More Than 2 Million Homeless in Flooding
Swirling flood waters of the Brahmaputra River have submerged the homes of more than 2 million people, drowning at least 40 of them in India’s remote northeast, officials said. Thirty-five other people have died of encephalitis, dysentery and malaria in Assam state in the past two days, they said. Military helicopters have dropped food, medicine and tents to hundreds of people stranded on rooftops since Thursday. Officials said that at least 3,500 villages were submerged after waters burst the banks of the river and its tributaries at several places last week.
