* May Department Stores Co. said its profit fell 12% to $135 million, or 41 cents a share, in its fiscal second quarter as it trimmed prices amid sluggish sales of apparel. The operator of Robinsons-May, Lord & Taylor and several other store chains said sales rose 2.6% to $3.14 billion. Higher expenses also hurt earnings, which met analyst forecasts.
