Johnson Has All the Pieces Back

Utility player F.P. Santangelo’s five-game suspension ended Tuesday, meaning for the first time since June 29, the Dodgers were not missing any players or coaches who had been suspended because of the May 16 Wrigley Field melee.

“It’s nice to, at least, not be short-handed,” Manager Davey Johnson said. “When you’re managing a game, to be one player short, that can cost you a game.”

Gary Sheffield has appealed his five-game suspension and his hearing will be held Aug. 29 in Milwaukee.

“It feels more like it’s over because we got a gap [in suspensions] and nobody’s suspended,” Johnson said. “Maybe they’ll forget [about Sheffield].”

Don’t expect newly acquired center fielder Tom Goodwin to get all misty about wearing a Dodger uniform again. Goodwin, who began his career as a Dodger minor leaguer in 1989, had a matter-of-fact attitude after his first week back with the club.

“I’m a Dodger, man,” said Goodwin, who rejoined the Dodgers July 31 in a trade with the Colorado Rockies for Todd Hollandsworth and prospects Kevin Gibbs and Randey Dorame. “It’s just really a matter of going out there and doing the job the best I can, play the game the way I know how.”

Sammy Sosa brought the crowd to its feet during batting practice. The Cubs slugger nearly hit a ball out of Dodger Stadium with a shot that hit the awning over the left-center pavilion and bounced back into the bleachers.
