Share

Six Orange County college students have been awarded a total of $1,800 in scholarships for academic and community service achievements. The grants were awarded by Better Advantages for Students and Society, a 7-year-old nonprofit organization founded by Arthur Davis and based in Corona del Mar.

The BASS awards are in two categories: the Dr. Art Davis Scholarship for a full-time college undergraduate in any major, and the Gladys Davis Memorial Scholarship--named in memory of Davis’ wife, who died in 1995--which is open to students in the health services profession. Gladys Davis was a nursing supervisor.

Students must have at least a 3.25 grade-point average to qualify. Requirements include community service activities and a 1,000-word essay about personal goals.

Winners of the Dr. Art Davis Scholarship are Jeff Combs of Golden West College, Donnamarie Mocny of Irvine Valley College, and Geneva R. Viselli of Irvine Valley College.

Receiving the Gladys Davis Memorial are Yedda Marcelino of Irvine Valley College, Rachelle Rodriguez of Golden West College, and Stacy de Santiago of Cal State Long Beach.

Each student received $300.

Davis, a clinical psychologist and jazz musician who lives in Long Beach, said BASS also provides the homeless with food and musical entertainment. He hopes to increase the scholarship award with more support from private and corporate donors.
