No Doubt to Be on VH1

Orange County’s No Doubt will appear on VH1’s “Storytellers” series in an episode scheduled to premiere Sept. 24. The session, filmed Thursday in Carson in front of about 300 fans, included the first performance with the group in five years of its former leader and chief songwriter Eric Stefani, singer Gwen Stefani’s older brother.

Eric Stefani left the band in 1994--just before the release of “Tragic Kingdom,” the group’s breakthrough album that became an international hit--to pursue his burgeoning career as an animator for “The Simpsons.” He joined his sister and former bandmates Tony Kanal, Tom Dumont and Adrian Young to play piano on “Trapped in a Box,” the early-’90s song that was No Doubt’s first single.

The group discussed and performed 10 songs, including recent hits “Ex-Girlfriend” and “Simple Kind of Life” as well as its stardom-launching ballad “Don’t Speak” for the hourlong show, which features musicians exploring the songwriting and recording process in intimate surroundings.
