Parks Service to Use Organic Fuel in Ship

The National Park Service announced that it will use an organic-based fuel on the Pacific Ranger, a research vessel that monitors marine resources in Channel Islands National Park.
Biodiesel, made from used cooking oil, is nontoxic to the marine environment. The bio-fuel will also be used on Anacapa and Santa Barbara islands.
The two-year pilot program is expected to show the effectiveness of using organic-based fuels in sensitive marine environments. The fuel is provided by Green Energy Parks, a program that promotes the use of renewable energy in the national parks. Green Energy is a partnership of the Department of the Interior and the Department of Energy.
By using biodiesel fuel, officials expect the Pacific Ranger to have less exhaust emission, pose less of a fire hazard and have less potential for marine contamination. For more information, look at https://www.nps.gov/chis/pacranger.htm.
