City Council members can’t prevent the Irvine Ice Arena from closing its doors at the end of the month, but they have pledged to try to find a new location for the rink.

The council unanimously formed a task force composed of Councilman Larry Agran, Mayor Christina L. Shea and members of several local public agencies.

The group will work with the arena’s managers to scout inexpensive real estate in Irvine. The city will try to enlist the help of the Irvine Ranch Water District, the Irvine Unified School District, the South Orange County Community College District and other agencies that may have available property. The task force also will consult with the Irvine Co., other developers and recreation experts to come up with a plan to buy the land and keep an ice arena in the city.
