The City Council has directed city staff to prepare a “state of emergency” declaration on the recent electric rate hikes by San Diego Gas and Electric Co. for the Sept. 26 council meeting.

The declaration, normally used for natural disasters such as fires and earthquakes, is primarily a political statement to inform state agencies of the city’s dire situation, said Ken MacLeod, finance and administration department director at last week’s council meeting.

Staff members also will report on hiring a consultant to review options, such as contracting with other cities to buy electricity.
