At least seven people were killed and between 70 and 80 were injured when a bomb ripped through the last car of a night train in northern India on Monday, police and rail authorities said.

K. M. Tripathi, director of rail operations at Lucknow, capital of Uttar Pradesh state, said the bomb exploded about 10:40 p.m. as the train traveled through the village of Roza near the city of Faizabad.

The bomb exploded in a car used partly by passengers and partly for mail. Police said they suspected it had been hidden in the mail compartment.

They said the blast was the handiwork of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence agency and was linked to the armed struggle against Indian rule in Kashmir. India and Pakistan frequently blame violent incidents on each other’s agents.

Meanwhile Monday, the eve of India’s Independence Day ceremonies, Indian forces threw a security blanket over the rebellion-torn Kashmir region.

Thousands of members of the army, paramilitary forces and state police were deployed across the Himalayan region to counter stepped-up separatist militant attacks.
