Ever-Changing L.A.

Michael Ventura’s thoughtful piece on the ever-changing nature of Los Angeles (Opinion, Aug. 13) portrays “a city that won’t stay fixed and can’t be defined.” This recalls a description penned by novelist Thomas Wolfe in the 1930s not of a city but of an entire nation: “Perhaps this is our strange and haunting paradox here in America, that we are fixed and certain only when we are in movement.” Any way you slice it, Los Angeles and America continue to move and change. That’s how we came to be what we are today. And so it goes.
