Plants

Around the Yard

Things to do this week:

* Be wise when watering. Irrigate in the morning to cut down on leaf diseases, and even slugs and snails, which need moist soil to travel on. Watering in the morning ensures that leaves and the soil surface are dry by nightfall.

Be careful not to over-water plants or they may die of root rot in the hot weather. Plants may temporarily wilt during the hottest part of the day and not need water at all. Check soil moisture first, though it is OK to cool off plants with a light spritzing.

* Sow seed. The warmth of August is just what seeds need to sprout. Try starting any kind of seed in partial shade--in packs or flats, and even in the ground near the coast--being sure to keep the soil moist. Seeds of fall-planted, cool-season flowers and vegetables will sprout extra quick now, whereas if you plant later in the fall or winter it might take weeks.
