Other tech-sector earnings, excluding one-time gains or charges unless noted:

* ADC Telecommunications Inc., whose equipment eases bottlenecks in phone networks, said its fiscal third-quarter earnings climbed 165% to $127 million, or 17 cents a share, as sales jumped 67% to $891 million. The results beat analysts’ expectations by 2 cents.

* Agilent Technologies Inc. said fiscal third-quarter profit rose an unexpected 15% to $155 million, or 32 cents a share, after warning last month that chip shortages would keep the test and measurement company from meeting demand. Agilent, which was spun off from Hewlett-Packard Co. in June, said sales climbed 28% to $2.67 billion. The results far exceeded analysts’ forecasts of 20 cents. Before Agilent’s warning, analysts expected profit of 35 cents.

* Ciena Corp. said fiscal third-quarter profit rose and predicted that fourth-quarter and 2001 earnings will beat forecasts as phone companies buy more of its fiber-optic equipment to manage the boom in data traffic. Ciena’s net income rose to $28.2 million, or 19 cents a share, 2 cents better than forecasts, from operating profit of $100,000, or break-even, a year ago. Sales climbed 81% to $233.3 million.
