Varying Visions: LAX Light Show and Disney’s New Hall

Share

As a resident of Marina del Rey who makes frequent car trips to Manhattan Beach, I have had ample opportunity to drive past Los Angeles International Airport and enjoy the new illuminated columns along Century Boulevard (“(S)light Turbulence,” Aug. 15). I find Nicolai Ouroussoff’s criticism far too harsh. Though he may be schooled in all things aesthetic and architectural, I say, “Nicolai, dude, lighten up!”

I love the light show and I suspect many other Angelenos do too. In fact, my husband and I are searching for just the right vantage point to pull over and safely watch these beautiful light sabers color the night sky. Cheap date? Yes. Is that a bad thing? No.

For all of you who haven’t seen them, grab the dog, put the kids in their jammies and take a ride out to LAX one night to experience the light show for yourselves. You won’t be disappointed.

What Ouroussoff missed in his review of the LAX beautification project is that Ted Tokio Tanaka’s design captured the city’s soul beautifully. Isn’t L.A. really just a transparent “[movie] set of a gaudy sci-fi picture”? Hats off. I love it!

When I saw the photo of the LAX “artwork” columns, something clicked. I’ve seen this before.

I’m about halfway through reading Bernard Cornwell’s new historical novel “Stonehenge.” Is this circle of pylons properly aligned with local sunrise and moonrise at the equinoxes and midsummer and midwinter?
