A woman who fired shots at her ex-husband shortly before the Wisconsin-Purdue game last fall at West Lafayette, Ind., was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Teresa Tamez, 38, of San Antonio, had earlier pleaded guilty to attempted murder, but on Friday she denied that she planned to kill her ex-husband when she went to Ross-Ade Stadium on Nov. 6.

“I did not intend to kill him,” she said. “I wanted to kill myself because I could not take it anymore.”

Police said Tamez entered Purdue’s stadium hours before the game, pulled a gun out of her purse and began struggling with her former spouse, who was working as a cameraman for ABC Sports.

The man, Samuel Tamez, grabbed her and the gun discharged twice during the struggle, police said. No one was injured.

The judge in the case ruled that Teresa Tamez was guilty but mentally ill. She will receive treatment while in prison.
