Accused Drug Lord Could Get Life Term

The first accused Colombian drug kingpin to be extradited to the United States in a decade appeared in Manhattan federal court to face conspiracy, cocaine and money-laundering charges that could put him in prison for life. Alberto Orlandez Gamboa, 44, the alleged leader of one of Colombia’s most powerful drug cartels, arrived in New York Friday night after being extradited from Bogota. He had been held in a Colombian prison since June 1998 awaiting trial on murder and kidnapping charges.
