Green Party presidential candidate Ralph Nader criticized the North American Free Trade Agreement on Tuesday as a means for committing “toxic violence” on the U.S.-Mexico border and called for the trade pact’s repeal.

Campaigning across this city, Nader said the pact has led to violence along the border, destroyed the environment and is harmful to residents of the U.S. and Mexico.

“We need to get out of NAFTA and renegotiate trade agreements with the countries involved,” he said of the 1993 pact between the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Nader also dismissed claims that his candidacy will pull votes from George W. Bush or Al Gore.
