Lauren Beale has been named Real Estate editor, succeeding Dick Barnes, who left The Times in May after serving in the position since 1989.

Under Beale, the section will continue to be consumer-oriented, offering increased emphasis on the Southern California housing market and other new features. The Real Estate staff will also provide more residential real estate coverage throughout the paper.

“I look forward to enhancing the section with more immediate news, local housing trends and feature stories distinctive to the Southland,” Beale said.

Previously deputy Real Estate editor, Beale has had 14 years experience in the section since joining The Times in 1980. Beale, 43, is The Times’ third Real Estate editor in more than three decades. Dick Turpin became the first Real Estate editor in 1967.

Commercial real estate will continue to be covered by the Business section, under assistant business editor Roger Vincent.
