After a century of mathematics, grammar and science, Santa Clara High School is adding journalism to its curriculum.

School President Ed Lyon said 38 students who responded to a recent survey will attend the new journalism class. They will be responsible for producing a monthly newspaper, literary magazine and school yearbook.

“This is something the students said they wanted,” Lyon said. “This is also something the staff wanted, and we’re all very excited about the journalism class.”

The school is also celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, which makes the new class all the more special, Lyon said.

“We were able to send out newsletters to the community to let everyone know that after 100 years, we are still here, and to let them know about our new programs.”

Other classes being added are music, drama and computer science.

Toni Allen, a writer and public relations consultant for Whisenhunt Communications in Ventura, will head the journalism program. Allen said she will be focusing on some of the finer points of journalism. The class will include issues of censorship, privacy and fairness, and prepare students who might want to major in journalism in college.
