Police Volunteers Seek Donation of Car
City leaders credit the Moorpark Police Department volunteers with helping to cut the crime rate.
But the volunteers’ car broke down in June, which has forced members to cut their patrols in half, said Donna Jones, volunteer coordinator for the Police Department.
Now the volunteers, who used to spend more than 100 hours a month assisting deputies, must borrow an unmarked squad car before hitting the streets.
The group has logged more than 18,000 hours of service since its inception in 1994.
Moorpark has reported a 43% decrease in residential robberies and a 55% drop in commercial burglaries from last year, according to city police statistics.
“I think they [volunteers] can take some credit for that,” Mayor Pat Hunter said.
In early August, volunteer Harvey Plaks wrote letters to 15 area car dealerships asking for a donation. But so far there has been no response.
The volunteers are looking for a full-size, four-door car. The county would install the radio, lights and maintain the car.
