Building Freeways

Share

* I’m amazed that every time state officials look at our state’s impending gridlock doom they immediately jump on the “let’s build more freeways” wagon. Double-deckers, yet. With the millions it would take to build these cement corridors, how many buses could we buy? Small shuttle buses, big buses and double-decker buses. Buses that cover all areas of the city, that run every 10 or 20 minutes. Transfers that are easy and affordable.

The subway was millions of dollars a mile. Boy, that would buy a lot of buses. And maybe people would have to sit across from each other and talk to each other!

Despite engineering studies, the Santa Ana Freeway will be widened to only 10 lanes through North Orange County instead of 12 (“Section of I-5 to Be Widened,” Nov. 28). Buena Park City Councilman Art Brown claims that a 12-lane freeway would have a “devastating” effect on business. Yet it was OK to demolish small businesses along the freeway and build the Buena Park Auto Center where the freeway was supposed to go. What hypocrisy!
