Newport Harbor Tops Fountain Valley

Tony Melum scored 20 points and Erik Peterson had 10 points and 11 rebounds as Newport Harbor beat Fountain Valley, 64-52, Monday in the first round of pool play in the Bill Reynolds Tournament at Newport Harbor.

The Sailors (4-0) had four players score in double figures and broke open a close game in the fourth quarter by outscoring Fountain Valley, 23-15. Aaron Yarnel scored 13 points and Greg Perrine had 12 for Newport Harbor.

Chris Bailey led Fountain Valley with 18 points and Matt Ball had 10.

Newport Harbor plays Calabasas in the second round of pool play at 8:15 p.m. Thursday.

In another tournament game:

El Toro 84, Riverside La Sierra 53--Senior guard Chris Parish hit six of seven free throws and scored 20 points to lead El Toro (3-0) in the first round of pool play.

In the Aztec tournament:

Bellflower St. John Bosco 71, Corona del Mar 33--Donny Quiroz connected on seven three-pointers and scored a game-high 25 points to lead Bellflower St. John Bosco (0-2) to the pool-play victory.

Eric Snow scored 13 points to lead Corona del Mar (0-2).

Huntington Beach 50, Santa Ana Valley 42--Drew Janovick and Michael Sullivan each scored 13 points to lead the Oilers (2-1) to the pool-play victory.

Brandon Rogers led Santa Ana Valley (1-2) with 12 points.

Los Amigos 69, Irvine 56--Peter Vu scored a game-high 30 points, converting 13 of 15 free throws, and grabbed 13 rebounds for Los Amigos (1-2) at La Quinta High. Donald Smith added 17 points, including three three-pointers, for the Lobos.

Bobby Sarwine led Irvine (1-1) with 16 points and eight rebounds.

In the Cerritos Valley Christian tournament:

Garden Grove 50, Norwalk 43--Garden Grove forward Steve Sosa had 20 points and 15 rebounds, both game highs. Sosa made seven of nine field-goal attempts for the Argonauts (2-0).

In the Darren Oliver tournament:

Marina 70, Kennedy 66--Kennedy’s Robert Reyes scored 27 points, including 14 in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough for the Fighting Irish (3-2) to overcome a 12-point halftime deficit in a pool-play game at Fullerton High.

Marina’s Beau Brown hit four three-pointers in the first quarter and led the Vikings (2-0) with 22 points. Brown made six three-pointers.

Whittier La Serna 62, Savanna 51--Turmel Woods led Savanna (0-1) with 16 points and Abdi Hersi added 10, including three three-pointers.

In nonleague games:

Costa Mesa 61, Saddleback 39--Costa Mesa’s Steve Whittaker hit four three-pointers and led all scorers with 18 points. Mike Payne added 11 points for the Mustangs (3-2).

The game was scheduled to be played at Saddleback but was moved to Costa Mesa after a power outage in Saddleback’s gym.

Ismael Isais led Saddleback with 15 points and Robert Gonzalez had 12.

Tarbut V’Torah 65, La Verne Calvary Baptist 39--Noam Dashti had 27 points and 13 rebounds to lead to the host Lions (3-0). Aaron Hahn, a transfer from Atlanta, had 12 rebounds and eight points in the victory.

Orangewood Academy 59, St. Margaret’s 57--Warren Tamariana connected on the first two of three free throws and missed the last intentionally with one second left in the game to give Orangewood (2-1) the victory.

Tamariana was fouled while shooting a three-pointer with one second remaining in the game to send him to the free-throw line, where he made the winning shots.

Paul Janczyk led St. Margaret’s (0-2) with 15 points and seven rebounds.

El Modena 61, Santiago 41--Tavon Robinson scored 17 points and Dominic Robinson had 13 to lead visiting El Modena.
