O.C. Tech Sector Keeps Adding Jobs but Lags Far Behind Top Regions
Orange County companies may be creating more technology jobs, but the region remains well behind the high-tech powers of San Jose and Boston in terms of job numbers, according to a recent ranking of 60 high-tech regions nationwide.
The county ranks 10th in the nation with 93,585 high-tech jobs, about a third of San Jose’s technology work force, according to an annual study released recently by the American Electronics Assn. and the Nasdaq stock market.
The study is based on 1998 figures, the latest available to the group.
It showed that 80 of every 1,000 private sector workers in Orange County that year were employed by high-tech firms.
Though San Jose, the leader since 1993, maintained its lead with more than 252,900 high-tech jobs, Boston was close behind with 234,800. Los Angeles ranked sixth, with 160,544 high-tech jobs.
In a breakdown of the overall figures, Orange County ranked strongly in high-tech manufacturing jobs, placing fourth both in consumer electronics and in electronics components and accessories manufacturing. It was the third-biggest employer in defense electronics manufacturing.
