The socialist party of Ivory Coast President Laurent Gbagbo won most seats in those constituencies where voting went ahead during a weekend parliamentary election, final results showed Wednesday.

Voting for some seats in the north of the country was abandoned due to political protests and will have to be rescheduled. Turnout was a low 33%.

The National Electoral Commission said Gbagbo’s Ivorian Popular Front, or FPI, won 96 seats in the 225-member parliament while the old ruling Democratic Party, or PDCI, won 77.

The PDCI, which ruled from independence from France in 1960 until a military coup in December 1999, had 146 of the 175 seats in the old assembly dissolved after the coup.
