Bomb Kills Politician; Separatists Blamed

A plumber who served as a city councilor was killed by a bomb that blew up under the seat of his van. Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar blamed the separatist group ETA, short for Basque Homeland and Freedom. Francisco Cano, 45, was a councilor of the ruling center-right Popular Party in Viladecavalls, a town of 5,000 in the Catalonia region of northeastern Spain. Cano was heading to a job in the neighboring city of Terrasa when the explosive detonated, the Interior Ministry said in Barcelona.
