Tim O’Donnell, 57, veteran ABC News radio anchorman. A native of Middletown, Ohio, O’Donnell began his broadcasting career at radio station WOTT in Watertown, N.Y. Before joining ABC, he worked as a reporter and newscaster for several New York radio stations, as well as WPIX-TV Channel 11. O’Donnell joined ABC News in April 1968. Although O’Donnell was perhaps best known for his five-minute radio newscasts at the top of each hour, his career of more than 30 years at ABC included broadcasting continuous coverage of many of the major events of recent years. He first received nationwide recognition while still in his mid-20s, when he anchored ABC Radio’s coverage after the assassination of Sen. Robert F. Kennedy in June 1968. In addition to his responsibilities at ABC, O’Donnell was active in the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, the union that represents network broadcasters. He was involved in representing network newscasters during several major contract negotiations. On Dec. 13, at Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, N.J., of complications from a heart attack he suffered Dec. 5.
