Boys, Girls to Get Supplies for School
The Boys and Girls Clubs of La Habra/Brea will be buying books and school supplies for 100 of their members with money received as part of a $50-million settlement reached in an antitrust lawsuit against Toys R Us.
The local clubs will receive a total of $5,500 from the 1999 settlement, which requires the national toy retailer to give $790,000 to Boys and Girls Clubs throughout California and to donate items to the Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots program for three years.
State attorney general’s office spokeswoman Sandra Michioku said the settlement came from an antitrust lawsuit against Toys R Us over alleged price-fixing at the company’s stores.
Mark Chavez, a spokesman for the local Boys and Girls Clubs, said the money will be used to buy school-related items as part of the organization’s effort to enrich the lives of at-risk youth.
The items should be delivered to the children before Christmas, he added.
