* There is an area of actor Nick Stewart’s life which was not in your Dec. 21 obituary only because he and his family did not publicize it. In the 1980s the Los Angeles County registrar-recorder’s office decided to upgrade the places where precinct officers were trained to run elections. We were assigned the job of finding these new locations.

One of our first stops was at the Ebony Showcase Theater, where Nick, his daughter Valerie and the family welcomed us with open arms and offered their theater for nine- to 13-hour days while we taught election classes. The precinct officers were very appreciative of this wonderful teaching location, and the Stewarts were always there to offer help and assistance. The Stewarts were only given a token amount for the use of their theater (about enough for the family to have a meal in a restaurant), but Nick said this was another way he could give back to the community.

We feel that it is time for people to know that Nick and the Stewart family contributed significantly to the democratic process and the success of elections in Los Angeles County for a number of years.
